Dave Bennett was born in 1973, in Calgary, Canada. He studied Electroacoustic Composition, Sound Recording and Classical Guitar at McGill University with Alcides Lanza, Osvaldo Budon and Laurie Radford. During this time he became a member of GEMS (Group of Electronic Music Studios) and the CEC (Canadian Electroacoustic Community).
He is involved in many different musics; from pop /rock to jazz/punk to electoracoustic and improv. He also has a special interest in working with dancers, as well as with sound sculpture and radiophonic installations. He did a weekly Radio Show on CKUT 90.3 FM Montreal called Actuelle and was Composer in Residence at the Banff Fine Arts Centre. Also during this time he played concerts at many International Jazz Festivals in Canada and the United States, including Montreal, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Buffalo, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Vancouver, Toronto, Burlington, and Halifax, as well as concerts up and down the eastern seaboard with the band Jazz Pharmacy (Sinistre Sound Records).
In 1998 he moved to London, England which brought him into contact with many European artists and musicians. He played extensive concerts, notably with B.E.A.S.T (Birmingham Electro Acoustic Sound Theater), and at the London University, Kampnagel Sommer Theater (Hamburg), LMC Resonance Radio and the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Köln. In 1999 he was invited to participate in an installation/performance piece in a Welsh Slate Mine near Port-ma-doch, in northern Wales. This installation/performance featured many of his first sound sculptures. His involvement with dance as a musician was complimented with his work as a dance assessor with the London Arts Council.
In 2003 he moved to Berlin, Germany where he now resides with his wife, drummer Merle Bennett and his daughter Clara. In this year he was a featured artist in the international Free Radio Festival Radioriff (Ausland, Berlin), had a gallery showing of his sculptures in the Kopenhagener Gallery, and played many concerts throughout Europe, including the barcelona primavera festival. He contiues to tour extensively with: Hotelgäste (Schraum, Isolation Records), Erik and Me (Madunsky/Revolver), a.m.t. (brd ba$$$), Coal Oven (Isolation Records), Television Workshop (Umor), Edison Woods (Dock/Glitterhaus), Tunar (Japan-Improv), and Nom (Charhizma). He has played with Burghard Beins, Andrea Neumann, ‘Michael Zerang, Jason Forrest, Ignatz Schick, Tony Buck, Alesandro Bussotti, Michael Thieke, Derek Shirley, Merle Bennett, Michael Griener, Jonty Harrison, Bruce Penneycook, Chris Dalgrain, Jayrope, Sabine Vogel, Hector Moro, Thomas Ankerschmidt, Robin Hayward and Kai Fagaschinski among others. As well as playing music, Dave also teaches guitar and piano lessons.
He has received numerous residencies and project stipendiums both in Canada and abroad including the Banff Centre for the Arts, FACTOR, Shinkansen Bodyworks, ART Cologne, Kampnagel Sommer Theater, Kunsthochschule für Median in Cologne, Portma-d-oche Welsh Slate Mine Arts Centre, and the Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart.
