Anat Cohavi (clarinet, bass clarinet), Dave Bennett (guitar, tape recorder, radio) and Derek Shirley (drums, russian synth) make up this international trio living in Berlin. The German city is once again a mecca of musical talent in europe and a great melting pot of experimentation and styles. Coal Oven mixes styles and improvises music in the grand traditions of Captain Beefheart, Caspar Brotzman Massacre, Fat, Minutemen, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, Paul Motian Trio, Jimmy Giuffre, Morton Feldman, Radiohead and Björk. Indie rock, noise, freejazz, atmospheres, silence, no wave, musique actuelle; all music by Coal Oven is improvised, keeping indie rock forms in mind, but using stylistic references of these other genres. Really an ingenious formula, but one that Coal Oven does with an incredible intensity and soulfull heart that is breathtaking. They have recorded an iponemously titled E.P. in 2010 (isolation records) and are planning to release a new long player in early 2011.
